Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on Thursday 20th June 2019.
In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.
Refugee Week started in 1998 as a direct reaction to hostility in the media and society in general towards refugees and asylum seekers.
The theme of Refugee Week 2019, ‘You, me and those who came before’, is an invitation to explore the lives of refugees – and those who have welcomed them – throughout the generations.
The aim is to raise awareness of the problems refugees face and bring a much-needed spotlight onto their lives. The events taking place throughout the week will help the wider public understand not only the problems but also the vibrant networks of solidarity and support for refugees that are flourishing in civil society.
Events during Refugee Week are usually organised by different charities, local governments, refugee community organisations, schools, faith groups, arts organisations, day centres and umbrella networks. But on this World Refugee Day, we challenge everyone to join together and take a step with refugees.
