UN World Maritime Day

Prime Production - World Maritime Day

World Maritime Day is celebrated every year on 24th September, a day to recognize the accomplishments of the global Maritime industry. The event this year is set to take place virtually, on an online platform to adhere to social distancing policies arising as response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Sustainable Shipping’ is the theme for 2020, with a key focus on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). This allows for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to highlight the efforts they are undertaking in order to reduce pollution and environmental degradation to better achieve their targets in line with the UN SDG’s.

A future of sustainability is already a key focus within the global shipping industry, with the support of IMO regulatory framework. Through this, the global shipping industry are committed to lowering their greenhouse gas emissions, implement the Ballast Water Management Convention, reduce marine litter to protect invaluable ecosystems and encouraging more women to enter the Maritime community.

This year, the global shipping industry has also played a key part within the COVID-19 response and recovery. The industry was still highly active during worldwide lockdowns on various communities and industries, and continued to transport more than 80% of global trade, including life-saving medical and food supplies.

However, the pandemic still tore a humanitarian crisis throughout the industry as hundreds of thousands of people at sea have been left stranded upon ships as their contracts have been extended by many months.
The UN is committed to ensuring that pressure is placed upon Governments to designate seafarers as essential workers throughout pandemics to allow for safe crew changes to be implemented.
