There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 6 per cent of the world’s population, but account for at least 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
Indigenous communities play a vital role in creating a better, more sustainable world. Their traditional knowledge systems, passed down through generations, offer invaluable insights into environmental stewardship, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. Unlike many modern practices that often prioritize short-term gain, Indigenous ways of life are rooted in a deep respect for the land, water, and all living beings.
This holistic worldview not only fosters sustainability but also offers alternative models of coexistence that challenge exploitative systems and promote harmony with nature. As the global community grapples with climate change and environmental degradation, Indigenous voices and leadership are more essential than ever.
Beyond environmental wisdom, Indigenous communities embody rich cultural diversity, social resilience, and a strong sense of collective identity. Their experiences, perspectives, and systems of governance often center on values like cooperation, justice, and community well-being — principles that the wider world can learn from in addressing social inequalities and building inclusive societies.
Yet, despite their immense contributions, Indigenous peoples are often marginalized, their rights overlooked, and their lands threatened. Supporting and standing in solidarity with Indigenous communities is not only a matter of justice but a necessary step toward building a fairer, healthier, and more balanced world for everyone.
In order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.
