2020 World Humanitarian Day

Prime Production - World Humanitarian Day

August 19th shall see the celebration of the UN World Humanitarian Day, a day to honour all aid and health workers for their commitment in providing life-saving support for those desperately in need and within the most difficult circumstances.

The mark of the World Humanitarian Day originates from the 2003 attack on the Canal Hotel, Baghdad, which took the lives of 22 people, including dedicated humanitarian,  Sergio Vieira de Mello. Since then, the day has been one to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in the plight to help others.

2020 World Humanitarian Day is of a particularly exceptional nature, as the World has tackled the Covid-19 pandemic in recent months, which has posed the greatest challenge to existing humanitarian operations across the globe, alongside the new threats it has brought.

The government lockdowns that have taken place throughout the majority of our nations has further driven the most vulnerable people into an even more isolated position. The result has meant that communities, civil society and local NGOs have been on the front-line in ensuring that these individuals remain with vital aid and support.

This year, it is even more important that we honour our #RealLifeHeroes who have managed to continue to provide food in communities in which it is scarce, safe spaces for women and girls during lockdown, the safe delivery of babies into our planet and ensuring that refugee camps are still hospitable despite this new global threat.
