Biodiversity loss – Sustainable Development

Biodiversity loss - Sustainable Development

“Biodiversity is critical for safeguarding global food security”

José Graziano da Silva, Director-General, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)

FAO’s latest report analyses the State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture, making particular reference to the decline of plants, animals and micro-organisms.

The world is relying on a smaller amount of food to feed a growing population, which is expected to increase in the coming decades. Only 9 out of 6,000 plant species, which are cultivated for food, account for 66% of current crop production. Around 1,000 species including plants, fish and mammals are also in decline.

The causes of biodiversity loss have been linked to pollution, climate change, population growth and urbanisation, changes in land and water management, as well as overexploitation and overharvesting.

80% of countries are reported to be following biodiversity friendly practises, including Argentina, who have created 560,000 home gardens and 12,000 school and community gardens to provide more food, as well as Ghana, who are planting cassava plants on field margins to increase nectar production and to attract bees and other species.

Despite an increase in species-friendly policies, changes are not being made quick enough, leaving the future of the food system under threat.

Whilst sustainable solutions exist, the problem is that we aren’t responding fast enough.

From national reports to global studies, Prime Production works with key strategists, such as UN Environment and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to deliver key messages on sustainable development, the eradication of poverty, reduction of inequalities, as well as sustainable democracy and solutions.

Whether you require translation for your next project on biodiversity, interpretation for your next conference on climate change, or desk-top publishing for your website on sustainable solutions, consider Prime Production as your one-stop language service provider.

Our survival depends on our environment. With rapid population growth, expansion of cities and an ever-increasing consumption of natural resources, sustainability is the principle on which communities depend so together let’s call for immediate global action.
