Biodiversity: Nature’s Crisis

Biodiversity is variety of life on Earth, at all levels and the evolutionary and ecological processes that sustain life of our planet.
Our planets biodiversity is vital to not only animal and plant life but also human life as it provides us with clean water, food and life-saving medicines.

In 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change reported that nearly 1 million of all species on Earth are facing the threat of extinction, which poses a key threat to all life on Earth and sustainable development.
The UN had sought to protect global biodiversity through the UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020. However, a recent UN reported highlighted that none of the 20 targets which were signed by participating countries would be fully met by the end of this year. This draws light on how greater human action is required to halt destructive governmental, industrial and individual behaviors to save our biodiversity and planet.

Scientists also now claim that our planet is entering its 6th mass extinction, which is largely driven by human actions and behaviour, with a 68% decline in global populations of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles between 1970 and 2016.
The Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Elizabeth Mrema, quoted “We have no time to wait. Biodiversity loss, nature loss, it is at an unprecedented level in the history of mankind…We’re the most dangerous species in global history.”

In light of this a recent United Nations Biodiversity Summit, held on 30th September 2020, sought to provide Heads of State and Governments with information to allow them to be more concerned and committed towards protecting biodiversity so they can implement initiatives and policies to do so within their respective nations. This is also particularly important as it is these key stakeholders that would ensure the proper allocation of resources needed to meet the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
